WMAs and GTRs should have enough water for second portion of waterfowl season

LITTLE ROCK – Waterfowl season resumes with the second portion of the three-split, 60-day season at 30 minutes before sunrise Thursday, Dec. 6. The second portion will run until sunset Dec. 23, with third portion running Dec. 26 through Jan. 27.
Unlike this time last year, most of the AGFC's wildlife management areas and greentree reservoirs have ample water for waterfowl hunting. The question is, will we have the ducks? The expected weather system that will be in north Arkansas and in states above us should push some ducks southward. Luke Naylor, the AGFC's waterfowl program coordinator, expects a big push of ducks in mid-December as the state season's normal rain patterns at that time combined with colder areas in the Mississippi and Central flyways.
The first aerial survey of the state during the waterfowl season, taken the week before November's opening day, showed slightly more ducks that the long-term average for that period, but will well below what will eventually pass through Arkansas on the way south.
Geese also appear to have picked up in numbers as December has arrived, according to observations in the Delta region.
