To ensure high-quality hunting experiences, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission conducts special draw hunts on some popular wildlife management areas prone to overcrowding. As part of the agency’s efforts to get permits in the hands of hunters that will use them, the application process has undergone a bit of a change.

Turkey hunters in The Natural State checked 10,066 birds during the recently concluded season in April. This year’s season featured 16 days for all hunters and two more days at the front end of the season for the annual statewide youth turkey hunt. The regular season also features an earlier start, by five days, from the 2016 season, but leaving no quiet period between the end of the youth hunt and the beginning of the regular season.

If you’ve applied for an Arkansas elk permit in the past, you’ll see one major change this year when the application period opens May 1. Beginning this year, applying for an Arkansas elk permit will require a nonrefundable $5 application fee.

Arkansas's duck season ended last weekend for most hunters, but hunters less than 16 years old will have one final chance to go afield during Saturday’s youth waterfowl hunt. The second part of the state’s annual youth waterfowl hunt will take place from 30 minutes before sunrise until sunset. For the second year in a row, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission established a two-part youth waterfowl hunt, with the first part taking place during the first split of the regular duck season in December 2016.
