FORT SMITH — Despite hunters from eight locations in Arkansas bringing in squirrels to be weighed for this weekend’s inaugural Big Squirrel Challenge, it was bushytail fanatics from western Arkansas who claimed top honors in this year’s statewide squirrel-hunting contest put on by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

MT. IDA — Catching a five-fish limit totaling 13.99 pounds, recent Benton High School graduates Skyler Upton and Brayden Stewart claimed the Senior Division first-place prize at the third annual Commissioners’ Cup youth bass fishing tournament June 19 on Lake Ouachita.

Big Buzz Bass tournament returns to Lake Maumelle

The sixth annual Big Buzz Bass tournament presented by Bradford Marine and ATV returns to Lake Maumelle June 12, with more than $6,000 in prizes up for grabs. For the third consecutive year the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is working with 103.7 FM The Buzz to support the tournament and Arkansas bass fishing.

JACKSONVILLE – Harrisburg’s Trap Team, which was four shots from perfection during its winning performance in the Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports Program’s East Region Senior Tournament on May 1, will go into the AYSSP’s State Championship this Saturday as one of four top seeds and, based on that May 1 showing, the heavy favorite to win the championship.

JACKSONVILLE — Perfect weather and smiling faces greeted today’s participants in the Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports Program Senior Division competition. Shooters from the program’s West region competed at the Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation’s Jacksonville Shooting Range to take part in the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission program. With last year’s competition cancelled because of COVID-19 concerns, everyone was ready to get back to a day of camaraderie in the outdoors.

Anglers contribute catch to conservation

ROGERS — Anglers competing in the Beaver Lake Crappie Series L.O. VanZant Memorial Tournament on Beaver Lake did more than show off their skills last weekend, they also contributed to the future of fishing in northwest Arkansas. Thanks to a partnership between tournament directors and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, 130 crappie were placed into the lake’s nursery pond to lay their eggs and produce hundreds of thousands of crappie fingerlings that will be released into the lake later in the year.
