Arkansas Firearm Safety Curriculum

The Arkansas Department of Education, in partnership with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, collaborated with a leader in firearm safety training to deliver a comprehensive K-12 Firearm Safety Education curriculum to support school districts in meeting the requirements of Arkansas Act 229 of 2025.

This curriculum is designed to provide age-appropriate, standards-aligned firearm safety instruction for students in a school-based setting.

The development process included consultation with subject matter experts in firearm safety education. Contributions from Dr. Beth Alcazar, Ed.D., a recognized expert in children’s firearm safety and training, informed the structure and content of the curriculum. All materials have been developed in accordance with applicable statutory requirements.

Kindergarten through 5th grade curriculum packets are available for implementation beginning in the 2025-2026 school year. Curriculum packets for grades 6-12 will be released for implementation during the 2026-2027 school year.

To support transparency and family engagement, the following parent overview video has been created to communicate the purpose, scope and intent of the curriculum and to assist parents and guardians in understanding the instruction their students will receive.

School districts operating under the authority of the Arkansas Department of Education are permitted to utilize and reproduce materials, as necessary, to meet the requirements of Act 229 of 2025.
