Trail Information
The 7 miles of gravel roads that run through the area are open for hiking. No vehicular traffic or horseback riding is allowed.
Be aware: Stone Prairie Wildlife Management Area was part of Camp Robinson’s WWII-era field training before it was a WMA. And like Camp Robinson WMA and Camp Robinson Special Use Area, unexploded munitions may be found at Stone Prairie. Though the WMA is generally safe for roaming about on foot, anyone who comes across metal objects should leave them alone, mark the location and report them to Arkansas Game and Fish Commission personnel.
Hunters pursue small game, turkey and deer on the area. Visit agfc.com for season dates and avoid the area during permit hunts.
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission manages Stone Prairie Wildlife Management Area (989 acres) for northern bobwhite and other wildlife that depends on restored prairie. The small, ground-dwelling quail is known for its zebra-striped head and iconic call. Once one of the most pursued game species in the state, quail have been in decline since the 1960s across their range.
The property was previously managed for cattle production. Mowed fields hosted carpets of grasses too thick for quail. Intensive management through prescribed fire and undesirable tree removal allows more sunlight to reach the forest floor where native grasses and wildflowers can thrive.
Stone Prairie’s blend of post oak savanna, oak-hickory forest and restored tallgrass prairie suit bobwhite and a host of other native species. Visit eBird.org for a list of birds spotted on the area.
