
Lake Dardanelle crappie worth more than a meal

RUSSELLVILLE - Crappie anglers on Lake Dardanelle may be able to win more than a fish dinner if they notice a special yellow tag behind the dorsal fin of fish they catch in the next few months. Fisheries biologists with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission have been busy netting and tagging several hundred crappie with special reward tags as part of a study on the crappie fishery this year.

HUGHES – Horseshoe Lake, an oxbow once part of the Mississippi River in eastern Arkansas, has long been noted for good crappie production, but recent studies have shown a mostly smaller, younger fish population. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is in the second year of a tagged crappie study to determine the cause of crappie mortality, and anglers can help.

Pete Clark, who grew up fishing Lake Catherine, didn’t catch the “big bass” in a local fishing tournament on Lake Hamilton the night of Tuesday, July 20. However, his 3.84-pound bass, part of a winning, 13.01-pound stringer he hauled in with his brother, Jessie, to win that night’s tournament, was the premier bass waiting to be caught as part of the sixth annual Hot Springs Fishing Challenge.
