FORT SMITH – The Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club and Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will be sponsoring a free Family Fishing Derby at Wells Lakes, adjacent to the AGFC’s Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center, on Saturday, Nov. 6.

AGFC begins major hatchery renovation in North Arkansas

MAMMOTH SPRING — Arkansas Game and Fish Commissioners yesterday celebrated a successful partnership with trout anglers to begin a major renovation to the Jim Hinkle Spring River Fish Hatchery today in Fulton County. The hatchery is the only state-owned fish hatchery in Arkansas devoted to the production of trout.

Golden rainbows return to White, Spring rivers

MOUNTAIN HOME — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission worked with Crystal Lake Fisheries, Inc., to stock an additional 8,000 rainbow trout in the White River below Bull Shoals Dam and 2,000 rainbow trout in the Spring River last week. Some of the trout stocked were golden rainbow trout, which have proven popular with Arkansas anglers the last few years.

Lake Catherine sees third round of smallmouth bass introduction

HOT SPRINGS — Arkansas Game and Fish Commission biologists, aided by Chuck Emrick, a Lake Catherine shoreline resident, stocked nearly 48,000 smallmouth bass fingerlings into the smallest of Arkansas’s diamond lakes in early July. This was the third year of an introduction attempt to establish smallmouth bass in Lake Catherine.

Arkansas hatchery convoy completes 2,200-mile striped bass stocking

SPRINGDALE — Striped bass on the Atlantic Coast may travel hundreds of miles from the ocean to freshwater bays to spawn, but thanks to the efforts of Arkansas Game and Fish Commission biologists, some landlocked stripers in Beaver, Norfork and Ouachita lakes can claim a spawning run measuring thousands of miles. Last week, hatchery staff transported a load of striped bass fingerlings from Watha, North Carolina, on a 2,200-mile road trip that lasted nearly 72 hours from start to finish.

AGFC releasing tagged catfish just in time for The Big Catch

LITTLE ROCK — The cats with the tags are back, and this year, they’ll be swimming in Boyle Park Pond just in time for The Big Catch, a community fishing event and health fair on May 22 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants can win prizes, enjoy music and some much needed fresh air in addition to the free fishing fun, courtesy of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Community First Alliance.

White Oak is white hot for bass

CAMDEN — Stephen Tyson Jr. nearly called his shot on the timing when double-digit fish would start to show at Lower White Oak Lake in Ouachita County. He’d been gradually catching bigger and bigger fish on the lake during the last few years, and this March, he finally connected with a true 10-pounder in the recently renovated lake.
