LITTLE ROCK — Most groups of waterfowl hunters will automatically yield to one or two callers who have the experience and knack for reading the birds and knowing exactly what sounds will give the best odds at drawing them in for a closer look at your decoys. But for beginners, sitting still in the blind just waiting for someone to call the shot can get as stale as a local duck in mid-December. Here are a couple of nearly failsafe options to hand to the greenhorns when chasing greenheads.

BENTON — A recent partnership between the City of Benton’s Parks and Recreation Department and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission may provide a template for success in introducing youth to the joys of angling in Arkansas. Four groups of children, aged 4 through 13, and their parents all had the opportunity to participate in a special multi-class fishing program at Benton’s River Center recreation complex.

LITTLE ROCK — A recent article titled “Does Fishing Have a Future?” focused on a disturbing trend among Americans that shows fewer anglers hitting the water to wet a line every year. The traditional route of a parent teaching their child to fish is faltering. Fishing In The Natural State, a beginner’s fishing program administered by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, hopes to offset some of this loss in our angling ranks.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s new Outdoors Skills Program rewards beginning and veteran hunters and anglers with a special patch for their accomplishments in the outdoors.

HEBER SPRINGS - Members of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission joined local trout guides, educators and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service last week to teach 35 4th- through 6th-grade students about fishing and conservation of our aquatic resources at the 3rd annual Little Red River Fish Camp at JFK Park in Heber Springs.
