Application period for Arkansas public land alligator hunts open

LITTLE ROCK – People interested in chasing an Arkansas alligator on public land and water this fall have until midnight June 30 to put their name in the hat. Applications for the 2020 Arkansas alligator season are available online at www.agfc.com.

Canceled hatchery fishing derbies result in bonus catfish stockings throughout Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK — Precautions to limit the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19 have forced the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to cancel the annual fishing derbies held at its five fish hatcheries in June, but anglers throughout the state will still be able to enjoy some quality time chasing catfish. AGFC hatcheries are delivering thousands of pounds of catchable-sized catfish to small, publicly accessible ponds throughout Arkansas to prepare for Free Fishing Weekend, June 12-14.

Apply for a WMA deer hunting permit by July 1

LITTLE ROCK – The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has opened the application period to hunt deer on some of the more popular wildlife management areas it manages until July 1. Hunters interested in pursuing white-tailed deer during this fall’s permit-only hunts may apply online at www.agfc.com.

Buffalo River Elk Festival canceled, elk permits to be drawn online

JASPER — The Buffalo River Elk Festival, originally planned for June 26-27 has been canceled, according to a social media post today from the festival planning committee. The cancellation was in accordance with Arkansas Department of Health guidelines amid the continuing battle to slow the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Comment on proposed Arkansas fishing regulations changes

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is asking for public comments on possible changes to fishing regulations for 2021. Changes to general fishing rules, rules for commercial anglers and fish farms are all being evaluated before the Fisheries Division formally proposes them to the Commission in August. A survey will be available at www.agfc.com for the next 45 days to gather public input.

LITTLE ROCK — A friend of mine who grew up in Yell County was a regular visitor of the creeks that zig-zag through the Ozark and Ouachita mountains. One of his favorite fishing, swimming and paddling spots was Big Piney Creek in Pope County.
