Arkansas fatmuckets live only in Arkansas and only in the Saline, Caddo and upper Ouachita rivers. The former range of the species is greatly reduced, primarily due to construction of 16 lakes on rivers where it once lived. other threatening problems include channel alternations during highway construction and maintenance; in-stream gravel mining; sedimentation resulting from timber harvest; runoff from barite and bauxite mines; and improperly treated municipal waste.
