About this Species

< Back
Scientific Name: Lepomis gulosus
Range:Warmouths are found across Arkansas, particularly in the oxbows of the Delta
Habits and Habitat:These small sunfish prefer slow-moving streams, shallow lakes, ponds and sloughs with muddy bottoms, weeds, and lots of logs or woody cover.
Fish Fact: Warmouths often are confused with rock bass because of their mouths (which are larger than other bream). They often have several reddish-brown streaks radiating from the eye across the head.
As A Group:Sunfish can be found from the deepest clear-water reservoirs to nearly stagnant backwater sloughs. They often make up the base of the food chain in areas where shad are scarce.
