Name:Southern Painted Turtle
Scientific Name: Chrysemys dorsalis
Description:This small, aquatic turtle is known for its orange-red stripe along the middle of its shell. It may have small, yellow stripes on the sides of its head, and a yellow or red stripe on each leg.
Habit:Painted turtles like slow water with lots of vegetation and a soft bottom. They spend lots of time basking on logs and rocks. Like most turtles, they eat insects, crayfish, mollusks, algae, plants and dead animals.
State Occurrence: Gulf Coastal Plain and Delta.
