Name:Red-eared Slider
Scientific Name: Trachemys scripta
Description:These aquatic turtles can be up to 11 inches long. They usually are medium to dark green, sometimes with a yellow pattern on top. The head has a bright red patch on either side and often has yellow patterns. The bottom shell is yellow with large, dark spots.
Habit:They are found just about anywhere there is water, although they prefer shallow, quiet water with plenty of places for basking. Young turtles eat insects, and larger turtles add plants, fish and dead animals to their diets. Females usually nest near water and lay up to 36 soft-shelled eggs in a season. Sliders live up to 30 years.
State Occurrence: Statewide; the most common aquatic turtle in Arkansas.
