Name:American Coot
Scientific Name: Fulica americana
Habit:Coots need a running start to fly. They often are seen trying to take off from water, leaving splashes for each footstep until they build enough momentum to take wing.
State Occurrence: Coots are found in many lakes, marshes and reserviors in Arkansas. Most coots in Arkansas are winter migrants, but a few have been known to nest within the state.
