Special Youth Modern Gun Deer Hunt
Youths 15 and younger may harvest deer during the special youth modern gun deer hunts, Nov. 7-8, 2009, and Jan. 2-3, 2010, in all zones. Youths may harvest their seasonal bag limit during the youth hunt. Deer harvested during the youth hunt are not bonus deer and count toward the seasonal bag limit. Youths 15 and younger may harvest any buck without regard to antler restrictions throughout the 2009-10 deer season.

Youths may kill a buck or a doe statewide during the Nov. 7-8 hunt. Youths may kill a buck or a doe in zones 9, 12, 16, 16A and 17 during the Jan. 2-3 hunt. Youths in all other zones may kill only bucks during the Jan. 2-3 hunt.

Holders of a 65+ Lifetime Hunting License or a 65+ Lifetime Combination License also may harvest deer during the statewide youth hunt, Nov. 7-8 when accompanying a hunter 15 or younger. This deer must comply with standard zone and WMA restrictions and is not considered a bonus deer.

Only youths may hunt deer with modern guns during the Jan. 2-3, 2010 special youth modern gun deer hunt.

Q: Does the adult mentor have to possess a hunting license?
A: No, the adult mentor does not need a hunting license. Youths who have completed a hunter education course must be accompanied by an adult mentor who is 18 or older. Youths who have not completed hunter education must be under the direct supervision of an adult mentor who is 21 or older.
Q: If there is a permit hunt in progress on a Wildlife Management Area, can a youth hunter hunt on that WMA?
A: No. Wildlife Management Areas where a modern gun or muzzleloader permit is required to hunt, are closed to the special youth modern gun deer hunt.
Q: Can archery hunters still hunt during the special youth modern gun deer hunt?
A: Yes. Adult archery and crossbow hunters can hunt during the youth hunt, but must wear orange.
Q: Does the mentor accompanying a youth hunter have to wear hunter orange?
A: Yes. Youth hunters and their mentors must wear hunter orange.
Q: Can youths hunting on land registered to a camp participating in the AGFC Deer Camp Program and/or DMAP use management deer tags issued to that camp without them counting toward the youth’s bag limit?
A: Yes. During the special youth modern gun deer hunt, youths can use doe permits or management deer tags on deer camps participating in the AGFC Deer Camp Program and/or DMAP. These deer do not count toward the youth’s seasonal bag limit.
Q: How many deer can a youth take during the special youth modern gun deer hunt?
A: Youths hunting during the statewide special youth hunt may harvest their seasonal bag limit. Deer Zone and WMA Zone bag limits apply to this hunt. WMA doe quota permits are not required.
