Permit Applications and Private Land Permits
The 2008 elk season will be broken into two segments: September 22-26, 2008 and December 8-12, 2008. There are 26 permits available. Of those 26 permits, 24 will be awarded at the annual Buffalo River Elk Festival in June. Two of the permits were auctioned during fund-raising activities of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
The application period for the 2008 elk season permits on public land began on May 1 and will end on June 2, 2008. The application period for the private land hunt will began on May 1 and will end on July 15.

Changes for 2008
- The application period will run May 1st – June 2nd for the public land elk hunt. Application will run May 1st – July 15th for the private land elk hunt.
- An either-sex permit draw has been added to the zone B private land elk hunt. Three landowners will receive an either-sex permit each and must assign it to a hunter and notify the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission as to who will be using the permit.
- The draw date for the public land hunts is June 28 at the Buffalo River Elk Festival.
- The quota for the zone B antlerless elk permits has changed to a seven elk quota. Once this quota has been met, the season will be closed.
On-Site Permit Application
We will again be taking on-site applications at the Buffalo River Elk Festival for one of the September bull permits. You must be present to apply and you must be present to win. Applications for the on-site permit will be taken from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, June 27 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 28. The draw will take place at 4 p.m. on June 28.
License Requirements
Applicants must be a current Arkansas resident to be eligible for a permit. Holders of the $1,000 Lifetime License, regardless of state of residency, are eligible. Active-duty military personnel who are residents of Arkansas or are stationed in Arkansas are eligible. Hunters must have a valid Resident Sportsman's License if drawn for a permit. Hunters under 16 are not required to have a license but must supply a valid Hunter Education number with application.

A permit is required to hunt elk in Arkansas.
Hunter Education
