Buffalo River Elk Festival at Jasper
June 29-30, 2007
Jasper and Newton County residents are busy preparing for their annual Buffalo River Elk Festival. The 10th Annual Jasper/Newton County Elk Festival will be held on Friday, June 29 and Saturday, June 30, 2007 in Jasper, Arkansas. The award winning festival began in 1998 to celebrate the successful reintroduction of elk to Newton County and has been an annual event every year since.
The highlight of the festival is the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission drawing for elk hunting permits. Hunters this year will have a chance to win one of the 26 public land permits available online at www.agfc.com or at any license dealer during May. The hunters will be selected from a squirrel cage every hour throughout the day starting at noon.
An added attraction for this year’s hunt will be an on-site drawing for a permit. One permit will be issued to someone who makes application at the Elk Festival in Jasper. Sign up, stick around and you may win a permit. For this permit, the lucky hunter must be present. Just like the other public land elk permits to be drawn, entrants must be an Arkansas resident. The drawing for the on-site permit will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 30.
The drawings and most of the activities will be at the courthouse square in Jasper with a kids' fishing derby on the banks of the Little Buffalo River. There will also be a talent show, turkey shoot, Arkansas State Championship Elk Calling Contest, Miss Elk Festival Beauty Pageant and a Dutch oven cook-off sanctioned by the Arkansas Dutch Oven Society. There will be activities for all ages such as elk information seminars, arts & crafts, kid's fishing derby, elk calling contest, music and great food.
The drawing for the public land elk hunting permits for the 2007 elk hunting season in Arkansas will be held in Jasper on June 30, 2007. Thousands of hopeful elk hunters applied for the permits for last year's hunt. The two segment season will be held Sept. 24-28 and Dec. 3-7.
