2008 Elk Hunt Drawings
As in previous years, the highlight of the annual Buffalo River Elk Festival was the drawing for the public-land elk hunting permits awarded by the AGFC. Hunters’ applications were drawn from a squirrel cage containing more than 7,000 names. Two other hunters won permits through Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation fund-raising activities.
Two of the public land permits are earmarked for a hunter under 16. The action came from commissioners of the AGFC, who often look for chances to involve and encourage young people of the state to participate in hunting and fishing. These permits are the only ones with an either-sex tag, meaning the hunter can kill either a bull elk or a cow elk. To be eligible to win the elk permit, youths must have successfully completed a hunter education course.
There was an added attraction again this year. One bull permit was issued to someone who applied for the on-site permit. Applicants who applied in person on Saturday, June 28 and stuck around for the drawing were eligible to win the on-site permit.
The on-site permit was awarded to Loretta Trammell of Mountain View, Arkansas.
