Aquatic Resources Education

The purpose of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Aquatic Resources Education Program is to increase public awareness and understanding of our natural resources and our aquatic ecosystems, to enhance participation in sportfishing, and to develop responsible attitudes toward our aquatic environment.  Outreach efforts like the Mobile Aquarium Program,  the Fishing Derby Program, the Classroom Aquarium Program, the Tackle Loaner Program, and the Fishing Seminar/Clinic Program take and aggressive approach to introducing fishing and aquatic appreciation to Arkansans of all ages.

Securing one of the programs is a competitive venture, with successful recipients being selected through an objective screening process.  The first step in the process is to submit the appropriate application for the program in which you are interested.  Follow the links below for applications and more information or call Aquatic Resources at (501)676-9506.

Mobile Aquarium Program

Aquarium displays are at the forefront of the Aquatic Resources Education efforts. Four mobile aquaria of differing sizes are available free of charge for display at schools and qualifying community events, such as fairs, town festivals, outdoor shows, and youth events. Since the program’s inception in 1991, literally millions of people of all ages have enjoyed the aquarium displays, which feature native fishes and turtles.

If you are interested in obtaining an aquarium for an event in your community please go to the event application link. Print off the application complete it and send to the address on the top of the application.

If you are a teacher or school administrator go to the School Program Application link to apply for an aquarium to come to your school.

Fishing Derby Program

The Fishing Derby Program is designed to prove a positive fishing experience for children, senior citizens and physically challenged individuals. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission co-sponsors these events with organizations such as civic clubs, municipalities, other government agencies, churches, schools and nursing homes.  The sponsors recruit volunteers and provide a public derby site.  The Commission stocks the site with fish and provides technical guidance for the event.

Classroom Aquarium Program

Aquatic education and environmental awareness are best begun at an early age.  To aid Arkansas teachers with this, the Aquatic Resources Education Program supplies 55-gallon aquaria to selected classrooms across the state at no cost to the teacher or school district.  We require only that teachers submit an annual report detailing how the aquarium is used in their classroom.  By providing teachers a starting point, we hope to raise the environmental consciousness of Arkansas’ students.

Tackle Loaner Program

In 1993, the Commission started a program to loan fishing tackle to the public. Rod and reel combinations are placed in public libraries for individuals to check out, just as they would a library book. In 2001 this program was expanded by providing at some locations fly-tying equipment, which could also be checked out. Currently, over 20 libraries across the state participate in this program. Check the site locator link to find a site close to you. If you are interested in getting your library started in this program get the program request form from the application link.

Fishing Seminar/Clinic Program

Like most other activities, fishing requires a basic knowledge of techniques and your quarry for consistent success and enjoyment. To help supply these tools to anglers, seminars and clinics are periodically held at various locations across the state. These educational events can be tailored to a variety of skill levels, from beginner to seasoned professional.
