Description

Halowell Reservoir and Cox Cypress Lake are within 33,901-acre Bayou Meto Wildlife Management Area, the largest WMA owned by the Game & Fish Commission. Cox Cypress is a natural oxbow of Bayou Meto. Halowell was once part of a private duck hunting club and now serves primarily as a rest area for thousands of wintering ducks. Because of Halowell's rest area status, visitors are not permitted on the lake during much of the fall and winter, so anglers should check open dates before planning a trip. Cox Cypress is open to fishing year-round.

Both lakes offer top-notch angling for bluegills, channel catfish, crappies and largemouth bass, and Halowell also has a healthy population of big redears. On Cox Cypress, most anglers fish around cypress trees and buckbrush. Halowell anglers work the lake's dense stands of buckbrush, willows, coontail, water lilies and dead timber. Heavy cover and shallow water make boating on

Hunting for small games, ducks, deer, turkeys and furbearers is available on the WMA, and wildlife watchers can view migrating song and water birds, wintering eagles and alligators.
