Hunter Education

The Arkansas Hunter Education Program is dedicated to the sportsmen of Arkansas with a central theme of safety and sportsmanship. The program is structured to acquaint students with the many wildlife oriented recreational opportunities and recreational shooting sports available to them.

Prior completion of a state approved Hunter Education course is mandatory for any person with a birth date later than December 31, 1968 to hunt in Arkansas. Further information may be obtained through the Arkansas Hunting Guidebook, by calling 1-800-482-5795, or  click here to send an email request to Cody Walker.

Who needs a Hunter Education card?

A hunter born after 1968 must carry a valid Hunter Education card. A card is also required of youth applicants for permit hunts. Hunters under 16 do not need to have a card if they are under the direct supervision of a holder of a valid hunting license at least 21 years of age. Arkansas honors the home state Hunter Education cards of nonresidents.

How to take Hunter Education Classes

There are now three ways to complete the Arkansas Hunter Education course.

Instructor Led Class
The traditional method is an instructor led class. These classes may be a couple of hours each night for three to four nights or a full day Saturday class. The examination will be given at the end of the class. The program is administered through the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, and taught through a corps of trained volunteer and professional instructors on a statewide basis.

CD-Rom Self-Study Course
The CD-Rom self-study course allows students to complete the course using their home computer. At your request a CD-Rom will be mailed to you. Students are required to complete each section of the CD-Rom self-study course, generate and print a report to take with them to the final examination. Examinations are offered at different testing sites around the state.

Online Self-Study Course
The Internet based course is an online self-study course.  Students are required to complete each section of the online self-study course, generate and print a report to take with them to the final examination. Examinations are offered at different testing sites around the state.

The CD-Rom and Online Self-Study courses are not considered complete until the final examination is taken at one of our testing sites
