2009 Special Hunts

The White River National Wildlife Refuge, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and the Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation will hold two special hunts at Cook's Lake this fall hunting season.

Youth Deer Hunt - December 5-6, 2009
A special youth-only deer hunt takes place the first weekend of December each year. The dates for the Special Youth Hunt are December 5-6, 2009, with a mandatory orientation prior to the hunt.

Only 10 permits are issued to youth 15 and under as of December 8, 2009. Those selected for past hunts will not be selected for another hunt unless there are not enough applicants to fill all ten slots. Each participant is required to have an unarmed chaperone 21 or older. If the youth does not have a gun and/or chaperone, either or both will be provided. All participants are required to complete a hunter education course prior to the hunt.

To apply, please print or type the youth applicant's complete name, hunter education number, date of birth, and phone number on the back of an official U.S. postcard addressed to White River National Wildlife Refuge, c/o Matt Conner, P.O. Box 205, St. Charles, AR 72140. Contact Matt Conner at (870)282-8200 for more information. Applications must be postmarked by October 1, 2009.

Mobility Impaired Deer Hunt - December 11-13, 2009
A deer hunt for the mobility impaired takes place the second weekend of December each year. The dates for the special Mobility Impaired Hunt are December 11-13, 2009, with a mandatory orientation prior to the hunt.

To qualify, applicants must be mobility impaired. Mobility impaired is defined as a permanent physical condition that severely impairs your mobility, which requires the assistance from a wheelchair, braces, crutches, or other similar aids of mobility. Applicants must also provide a letter from a physician to verify the applicant's physical condition that severely impairs their mobility without proper assistance. The level of impairment must be stated in a letter to verify the extent of the applicant's condition. The physician's letter must be on an official letterhead with the physician's original signature.

To apply for this hunt, contact Matt Conner at White River National Wildlife Refuge or (870)282-8200 for more information or an application. Applications must be postmarked by August 15, 2009.
