Greers Ferry Lake

Location: The area is in two counties; Cleburne and Van Buren, and runs adjacent to the lake. The management
area consists of the corps land that is above the conservation pool. There are 37,275 acres in the lease,
29,000 of which is managed by the Fisheries Division and the remaining by Wildlife Management Division.

About the Name: The area was named after the lake and land adjacent to it.
Ownership: The land is owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, but leased to the AGFC.
Age: The area was first leased in 1968.
Purpose: The lake area was first leased by the AGFC for the main purpose of fishery habitat development. It wasn’t until the late 70’s that the land above the conservation pool began to utilize for wildlife.
Description: The land is in the foothills of the Boston Mountains of Central Arkansas. The vegetation consists of oak-hickory woodland with scattered pine-cedar stands. There are some open lands, such as the public use areas, that have numerous grasses and shrubs.
Access: Accesses to area are numerous major highway networks , that lead to different public use areas and
surrounding lands.
Hunting
Opportunities:
Hunting is limited to land outside of the public use areas. The best hunting opportunities seen to lie with
the white tail deer and turkey. However, hunting is limited to archery tackle only. 
Management
Practices:
The AGFC in cooperation with the US Army Corps of Engineers, plant food plots, constructs or maintains habitat modifications for the betterment of wildlife.

Hunting:
The area has many recreational adventures. Since it is a Corps Lake, there is camping (both modern and primitive), fishing and other water sports, hiking and many other opportunities that exist for the enjoyment of the outdoors.
Other Points of Interest: The area surrounding the management area is honey combed with interesting things to do. The Corps
has a visitors center located near the dam, there is a Federal Fish Hatchery just south of the dam and
many other attractions in near-by towns. Additional hunting and other outdoor recreational opportunities
exist on adjacent leased land. This land is called the Cherokee WMA.
Restaurants
and Other
Facilities:
The management area and lake are located in the heart of north central Arkansas, just 70 miles north of
Little Rock. Motels, restaurants and supply stores can be found in Heber Springs, Fairfield Bay, Clinton and other smaller towns around the lake.
Special
Facts:
If you are hunting or fishing on the management area, you must remember to abide not only the AGFC
regulations but the Corps of Engineers.
Safety: One vital rule to remember is that loaded guns are prohibited in public use areas.
